Junior Music

Junior Music is available to all Year 9 and 10 students. Three separate courses cater for individual learning and preparation towards NCEA level 1 – 3, confidence in performance and skills for composition. Students are also tutored through academic musical knowledge and given the chance to progress and sit Royal or Trinity exams Grade 1 – 8. Students become musicians learning the skills to both enjoy music as a hobby or as a solo artist or group performer.

Out itinerant music programme offers free weekly music tuition in guitar, piano, vocals, violin, drums, saxophone and cello. Our Itinerant tutors include Rob Wells – saxophone and piano, Dan Marks – guitar, violin and cello and Alyssa Poole – vocals, piano and drums.

Senior Music

Senior Music gives students the opportunity to both perform, compose and extend their academic music skills. Senior music offers a full music programme including exams at all levels with outstanding success rates of merit and excellence endorsements. Senior students are given priority to both itinerant programmes and the use of the studios for practice outside classroom times.

The main music room is a comfortable environment with a teaching area as well as midi and computer spaces and individual study zones.

Performance opportunities include both in school performances at Iwi, prizegiving and special occasions as well as performances in the community at Womad, Rockquest, Community fundraiser busking, Opunakes Got Talent, Choir performances, Open mic opportunities and Gigs at a variety of venues.

Our most talented musicians are requested for major events including an opening act for the Warratahs concert, Opunake Arts festival main duo, Bands at the Beach and the opening act for RockQuest Regional concert to name a few.

Music is a hugely popular course at Opunake High School and caters for all levels of musicians from the hobbyist to the aspiring professional musician.
