Senior Leaders : BOT Student Representative : Student Council

Senior Leaders

All year 13/14 students have a leadership role within our school. The key aspect of this role is in the positive example they set for junior students. Senior leaders are expected to dress and conduct themselves in ways which maintains the positive culture of our school which visitors to our school always comment about.

OHS prides itself on the strength of the relationships which exist between students and students and staff and students. Lunchtime sports activities organized by senior leaders and often involving teacher teams contribute significantly to the strong caring atmosphere which exists.

All belong to one of six committees which are responsible for organizing key aspects of our school. The committees, listed below are chaired by prefects.

  • OHS Student Committees
  • Arts Committee
  • Sports and Leisure Committee
  • Academic Committee
  • Whanau Committee
  • Bi-cultural Committee
  • Environment Committee

As well as their role as senior leaders and their role as senior leaders and their involvement in the student committees prefects assist in the running of school assemblies, take responsibility within whanau groups and tutor classes and take significant leadership roles in whole school events and activities.

Working with year 9 students to assist the juniors in their transition from Primary School to High School is perhaps on of the most important leadership roles that senior leaders and Prefects are involved in. This task is implemented through the Peer Support Programme and then continues through the Whanau Programme.

Senior Students at OHS work very effectively to help create and maintain a culture of high expectations and low anxiety which permeates our school.

Prefects

Our four senior prefects have key leadership roles through the school. They meet regularly with the Principal to plan events and to attend community functions such as ANZAC day.

BOT Student Representative

The OHS student representative on the BOT takes a full and active role on the Board. The student rep acts as a conduit between the Student Council and the BOT to feed back ideas, concerns and strategies between these two key key stakeholder groups. The student rep formally reports at each board meeting and in turn reports to the Student Council on BOT acitivities and plans. Once a term the BOT student representative reports on BOT matters to the whole school.

Student Council

The student Council gives a voice to student' it creates a communication link between students and senior management and students and the BOT. Each whanau group is represented on the Student Council which meets fortnightly to discuss issues of student interest and concern. An annual project is identified by the council which they fund through mufti days and their involvement in the school's gala.A democratically run student council assists both management and governors to meet student needs.
